Behind Yanan's big smile

“I can’t choose. I get accustomed to one place, one cafeteria, one dish…"

This girl, whose first confession about herself was half-heartedness, amazed me with her sociability and a big smile, when I just met her at the second floor of Journalism and Communication School after classes.

This girl is Yanan, born on 14th of November in 1993.

“Scorpion!” – I exclaimed, having remembered about my best friend, born on 15th.

“Not typical Scorpion,” – insinuatingly replied Yanan.

And that’s true. No mysteriousness, no closedness, no disguise. For sure, second type of Scorpion. However, infinite love for parents is still unchanged.

Family is one of the most important parts of Yanan’s life. She’s the only one child.

Her parents and she changed three places of living. The first one was clean Yinchuan in Ningxia province, where Yanan’s parents got married, and had lived till Yanan turned 6. The second place was industrial Taiyuan in Shanxi province, where washed clothes after one night drying outside became gray, and where snow was black. And the last city was Beijing, where Yanan moved at the age of 12. Since that time, Beijing “with its blue sky, green trees, all the leaders living in one city and vast arrange of facilities after the Olympic Games” became Yanan’s home that she doesn’t want to change.

“My family is here. I can’t live far from them,” – admits Yanan.

Indeed, her life close to her family is flowing steadily. She went to the High School 101 and had specialization in social studies. After that, she entered Beijing Foreign Studies University with the double major in English and journalism.

“That university had too many girls. In my group there were 26 girls, and only 4 boys!”

Maybe this reason was the main, why Yanan chose Tsinghua university, which is famous for its engineering departments, and consequently, the high number of guys. Maybe the fact that Yanan’s High School 101 was located very close to Tsinghua University had an impact on the choice, too.

But Yanan herself argues: “Tsinghua University means that your parents are proud of you. My parents’ love is more that I can take. That’s why I make everything to repay them.”

Connection “parent-child” is very strong in Yanan’s family. She shared one bright recent moment with me. It was her exams to enter Tsinghua University’s Journalism and Communication School.

“Tough times... I had four exams: journalism, reporting, English and Chinese politics. My dad followed me to the classroom because I was pretty nervous. He told me significant words. He said that failure wouldn’t be a problem, and I would try again if didn’t pass the exam. His words gave me strength, and I came into the classroom with tears in my eyes.”

Fortunately, Yanan passed her exams successfully and ended up at Tsinghua University, approaching her goals slowly but surely. What are her purposes?

She has already had the internship at Xinhua news agency at the position of editor. And Yanan is eager to connect her life with journalism.

“Even if it doesn’t give so much money, I still love reporting.”

Shanghai is a possible city, where Yanan would like to live and work for some years. Besides, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland are the first countries in her checklist.

“But after some years come back...”

Come back to her parents and lots of friends. Come back to cosy moments of cooking with her mum, drawing pictures alone, watching movies with friends, hiking, visiting art galleries and taking photographs. (By the way, this is Yanan’s blog: http://yanannx.lofter.com/)

But for now, Yanan tries to build herself. She’s inspired by an Australian video blogger Melissa Annie Whitelaw, 21-year-old journalist and model, which makes videos about music, fashion, gym and life goals. Her motto is “Live as yourself, embrace yourself”.

“This is what I want my life to be. You’re unique, don’t be like others.”

Maybe that’s why Yanan hates choosing… She complains that can’t make decisions, but in reality she’s likely to make them at a very first moment in order not to be influenced by other choices...

For now, I’m not able to answer this question. This is the facet I still need to explore in Yanan... Look behind her big dazzling smile…
